Our History
The CFNBI program is unique in Canada. Since its inception in 2016, CFNBI has produced 50 papers and managed >70 projects with a network of >141 collaborators. CFNBI has helped our collaborative network bring in more than $75M in funding, with $14M directly supporting CFNBI research activities. In 2026, the CFNBI will open as a distinct facility in a renovated CFI-funded laboratory at UBC Hospital. CFNBI’s scale, scope, and commitment to reducing bias and systematic barriers and involving diverse stakeholder groups are major strengths that continually draw new local, national and international collaborators to access CFNBI expertise and infrastructure, exemplified by new projects on monitoring pediatric brain health after major surgery, brain health in space, and the impact of forest fire smoke on brain health. Relationships are established with Statistics Canada, Canadian Consortium for Neurodegeneration in Aging, Canadian Traumatic Brain Injury Research Consortium, International Initiative on Traumatic Brain Injury Research, Canadian Concussion Network, and multiple industries (Quanterix, Alamar, Abbott, Roche, Fujirebio, Siemens, Beckman, MesoScale Discoveries, and Perceiv AI).
